WEST CHESTER TWP. — The Butler County United Way gave area agencies a shot in the arm Thursday as it kicked off its 2008 campaign with a goal of $2,635,000.
Officials admit that that amount - about five percent more than it raised last year, but lower than last year's $3 million target - will be a challenge to raise, but they say they are confident the community will help them reach the goal.
"We think that people will recognize that when times are tough it may be harder to give, but it's also more important," said Chris Worrell, chair of the 2008 campaign.
Worrell spoke before nearly 200 people at the campaign kickoff held at the Savannah Center in West Chester Twp.
The theme of the 2008 campaign is Live United, which Worrell said captures the essence of what Butler County stands for.
"This is a tough economy, but we can still achieve our goal. We just have to work harder," Worrell said.
United Way President Maureen Noe said officials adjusted the campaign goal this year due to the economic downturn. Noe said officials recognize that the cost of living has increased 4 percent and that residents are struggling.
But she added that the needs of the have-nots are real, so officials set the fundraising bar higher than the $2.5 million raised in 2005.
"The needs in this community are so critical," Noe said.
